Summer Sea Fishing in Ireland: What's Biting in August (Tactics & Gear Guide)
August is prime time on the Irish coast. Water temperatures are at their warmest of the year, bait fish are thick inshore, and several of our best sport species are actively feeding within casting range of the shore. Here's what's worth targeting this month, and the tackle to do it with.
Bass
Summer is bass season around Ireland. Look for them working the surf on sandy beaches at dawn and dusk, and around rock marks and estuary mouths on a moving tide. Soft plastics, surface lures and small metals worked with an erratic retrieve all take fish. Mackerel & Pollack
Reliable, fast, and great for building confidence or filling the bait box. Mackerel shoal close to piers, harbour walls and rock marks all summer — a set of feathers worked mid-water is usually all it takes. Pollack respond well to jigging soft plastics or spinners along kelp lines and rock ledges, particularly on the drop as the lure sinks.
Ray & Dogfish
For an evening session, bottom fishing over clean or mixed ground accounts for thornback ray and dogfish through summer. A simple pulley or running paternoster rig baited with mackerel or sandeel, fished after dark on the making tide, is the classic approach. Tides & Timing
As a general rule, fish the two hours either side of high water for bass and bottom species, and first light or last light for the best of the action in warm summer weather. A building tide after a calm, settled spell is usually worth prioritising over a big spring tide in rough water.
